Patchouli ~ Essential Scent of Capricorn

Patchouli, one of my favorite scents, is most often associated with Capricorn. It’s rich, earthy, and robust. Its lush, deep aroma always satisfies my senses. Patchouli became the signature scent of hippies a long time ago, so it’s frozen in time for many people and has become somewhat passe’, but I never tire of it.

Standing the test of time is a Saturn trait and I’m sure that patchouli will come around again in a Uranian guise as a trendy scent. Everything old is new again at some point. That’s how Saturn defeats his nemesis, Uranus. Nothing stays new for long. It either fades away or becomes tried and true.

I acquired a patchouli plant from my favorite herb farm this past summer ~ their last one. I took explicit instructions on how to overwinter it since it’s not native to my zone. It’s been so warm this winter, though, that I haven’t had to worry about it. Here’s a pic of my beloved plant ~ in bloom! ~ in January.

If you have the plant, try scattering a few leaves throughout a book you’re reading for an aromatic surprise when you turn to its page.

I read a tip somewhere to steep a few patchouli leaves in some warm water to fill the air with its scent. That didn’t work for me. They started to smell like turnip greens cooking which, if you’ve ever gotten a whiff of that aromatic bomb, isn’t especially “enticing,” imho. If you’re steeping, I suggest bypassing the leaves and using the essential oil instead.

Thoughts for the New Year

Isle of View CardsEach time the New Year rolls around, lots of us start feeling some serious pressure to make a few resolutions. Transiting Saturn can be a great motivator toward figuring out exactly what you “should” be working on. Wherever he is in your chart gives you a major clue about your homework for the year.

If you’ve been doing a good job on his little tests so far, I’m raising a champagne toast to you. If you haven’t, and have resolved to do a better job next year, I’m raising a toast to you, too.

Remember those times in your life when everything just seemed to come together so nicely? You felt a sense of ease in all areas of your life ~ mentally, spiritually, physically, and emotionally. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have that again? If you’re feeling that way now, my hat’s off to you and I’m raising another toast.

If you’re not feeling that way, maybe these three cards from the Isle of View Insight Cards can inspire you. I’m not making any resolutions this year, but I’m keeping these cards as my daily inspiration for the coming year. Want to join me?

2011 in Review ~ Rate Your Planets

We’ve all had to endure a year of the punk planets in Cardinal signs. I’ve yet to run into anybody giddy enough to say, Oh, this has been one of my favorite years EVER!

I mean, come on, it was pretty tough on everyone. We’re all a little cranky. But even though it’s been a rough year, we hang on to hope and cross our fingers that 2012 will be better, doomsday prophecies or not.

Here’s a way to take a look at 2011 and rate your planets or, better yet, rate how you lived up to the planets’ expectations of you.

Year End Review

Spend a little time evaluating each planet’s role in your transits this year. Give an overall rating for the inner planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars). They travelled through lots of signs and houses in your chart, so it’s a little harder to pin them down.

For the outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto), include the houses they visited in your chart as part of the evaluation.

Don’t look for things like Saturn squared my Sun and I didn’t feel like leaving the house all year or Pluto conjoined my Moon and I was miserable.

Instead, you might write something like this if Saturn was in your 3rd house:

  • I set some boundaries on how I communicate with my neighbors. I won’t  be a part of neighborhood gossip anymore. 4 stars
  • I improved my vocabulary and can now work the NY Times crossword puzzle in 15 minutes! 4 stars
  • I never got around to those driving lessons I promised myself. 0 Stars
  • I told Aunt Ada I’d visit her monthly, but missed a couple of months. 3 Stars

Get the idea?

I created a little worksheet to help you out with this. You can download it here. If you need some help with the houses, download this. Forget about aspects for this exercise.

If you’d like a life review, use this worksheet with your natal chart.

Don’t make snap judgements or give yourself a pass/fail before you start. You might surprise yourself with your overall review.

Just for fun, let’s go ahead and rate the planets, too. Take this poll and vote for your favorite planet of 2011, the one you were happiest with.

Capricorn Stones for Well-Being

My fave piece: smokey quartz and bright orange...

The primary stone of Capricorn is the garnet, so now’s the time to pull out your garnet jewelry and put it to good use. Good things to focus on with Capricorn stones are authority, responsibility, and success, and our relationship to those qualities.

Authority: the power to determine, adjudicate, or otherwise settle issues or disputes; jurisdiction; the right to control, command, or determine.

Hmmm. That’s a sticky one, huh? It can be a bit too intoxicating for some and repulsive for others.

My favorite quote on authority came from my high school drama teacher. She always reminded us to “Walk in with authority” when making an entrance. To tell you the truth, it works in real life a lot, too. Find your authority. You don’t have to pull up your Inner Bully to exercise it. Just find it.

The pictured stones are in my personal collection, but they’re not the only stones suitable for Capricorn or Saturn. You’ll find various stones mentioned by different websites and authors of crystal books. I guess it just goes to prove that nothing is written in stone. 😉

Stones of Capricorn ~ Green aventurine, calcite, leopardskin jasper, dalmation jasper

Stones associated with Capricorn’s colors of navy blue and black can work just as well. I subscribe to the school of personal symbolism ~ if it has meaning for you personally, it can help.

I’ve come across the following meanings for the stones in my Cap collection:

  • Dalmation Jasper ~ for lessons in disillusionment, encourages grounding, to ease a sense of fear
  • Green Aventurine ~ ease in changing careers, increases independence
  • Calcite ~ an excellent stone for grounding
  • Leopardskin Jasper ~ to ease inclinations toward being judgemental

What stones do you associate with Capricorn qualities?

Merry Christmas from The Twilight Zone

We can find the spirit of the season in the strangest of places. I found it in an episode of The Twilight Zone recently and wanted to share it with you.

This may be a rather odd and sentimental Christmas greeting, but what else would you expect from someone heavily under the influence of Uranus and the Moon? So, go ahead. Grab a cup of tea or Christmas Cheer and settle into a Christmas from “another dimension” courtesy of The Twilight Zone. There’s nothing to fear. As astrologers and intuitives, we’ve all been there before, right?

In this Christmas episode, “The Night of the Meek,” Art Carney plays a down and out Santa who taps into the miracle of Christmas via a magic bag that is able to supply to everyone their heart’s desire.

Merry Christmas!

Celebrating the Miracle of The Light

Scroll down to send an Inner Child e-card for Christmas.

Tonight is the first night of Chanukah, marking the beginning of the holiday season celebrating the miracle of The Light. The Solstice arrives on Thursday and Christmas on Sunday.

We’re all looking for the same thing really ~ Chanukah, Solstice, Christmas ~ a life lived in the light.

Many years ago, my best friend (who happens to be Jewish) asked me what I would like for Christmas. When I told her that I’d like a menorah, she was a little surprised but it arrived on Christmas day and is one of my most treasured possessions. It signifies so many things ~ the Festival of Lights, of course, as well as the Solstice and the return of the light. But it’s also a symbol of our  friendship that miraculously endures, where no darkness is allowed. When I am at my darkest, she is always there offering a light to lead me out.

Isha Lerner celebrates the holiday season in her Inner Child deck with the suit of Crystals. The Seven of Crystals shows a young girl lighting candles which resemble a menorah. Lerner says the candles “symbolize lamps or guides that help illuminate the process” of weaving “truth and wisdom into light.” I’m reminded of my special menorah.

The Ten of Crystals shows Christmas day after the gifts have been opened. As far as I know, this is the only deck that depicts Christmas. It’s a homey scene ~ children playing with their toys, papa throwing a yule log on the fire, and mama hanging a tiny stocking for the new baby she holds in her arms.

Let the Ten of Crystals warm your heart. Celebrations and festivals of all traditions bring people together. They instill a special feeling of gratitude that comes from the desire to be universally connected and loved. Open to the gifts that life has in store for you. ~ Isha Lerner, Inner Child Cards

Happy Chanukah! Happy Solstice! Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays! May all your days be filled with light. ~ cj
Send this card as an e-greeting. Just click on the card to go to Ms. Lerner’s site. Your ecard will arrive with this message:
May you always dream of magic yet to come!
If you believe…miracles happen!
Happy Holidays!

Winter Solstice 2011

Earth Renewal Moon Spirit of the Wheel Deck The first day of Capricorn, December 22nd, marks the Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. It is the longest night of the year and this year, one of the darkest. This is the dark of the Moon, the days prior to the New Moon of the 24th. Within this darkness, we create a womb for our hopes and expectations as we dream of the coming year. Let’s not forget that it is when the nights are coldest and darkest that the stars shine most brightly.

The Spirit of the Wheel Meditation Deck calls the period of Capricorn (December 22 ~ January 19) the Earth Renewal Moon. We renew and heal ourselves through sleep. It is one of the Moon’s greatest gifts to us. Our Earth sleeps, too, so that she may also renew herself. Her beauty sleep rewards us through the coming seasons. Tonight she dreams.

Sleep. Rest. Renew yourself. Dream of seasons yet to come.

Today, the Capricorn Sun trines Jupiter in Taurus and the Moon enters Sagittarius. A day of faith.

TIME Magazine Announces “Person of the Year 2011” Guess Who? Uranus in Aries!

English: Big crowd amassed in Midan El Tahrir,...

Image via Wikipedia

Well, it’s actually “The Protester,” but that’s just another name for Uranus in Aries. The Protester’s nemisis was/is Pluto in Capricorn fueled by Saturn in Libra ~ all manifestations of the Cardinal T-Square which was in effect for the past couple of years.

Read TIME’s cover story here. There’s lots of coverage here, including Loukanikos, Athens’ Protest Dog. For the life of me, though, I can’t figure out why Kate Middleton’s best fashion moments made this page. I guess a Burberry coat carries more influence than I thought it did. Let me step up and say that I protest this fashion fluff being included in this issue. The Uranian in me would have preferred Lady Gaga. (She’s an Aries with Uranus conjunct Mars, btw.)

Uranus just turned direct (December 11th), so he’ll be tromping over the first few degrees of Aries again. When a planet retrogrades we get to ask ourselves, “How can I make this better?” When it goes direct, we’re called to take action on our plans, to reach for the ideal. If Uranus is activating something in your chart, get your Change My World gear on.

What have you been protesting? Are you ready to change your world?

The Uncanny Timeliness of Email ~ Gemini/Sagittarius

Do you know about Plinky Prompts? Every day a new question is published and anyone can answer. Frequently the prompts are intensely aligned to the current astro weather. I got these in my email today.

If you'd like to see answers people have written or add your own, just click the photo to travel through cyberspace to Plinky's website.

The first question is total Sadge and the second is all Gemini. They’re both great questions, especially in light of our current eclipses. The prompts are also great for writers (Gemini/3rd house emphasis).

If I had two free plane tickets, I’d go to Scotland ~ Edinburgh. It’s one of those places that feels like it’s from another lifetime. That, or maybe an Alaskan cruise.

There aren’t many attractions here in my small town of “Hooterville,” but there’s a little museum I’ve yet to visit. It has a confederate bullet and an old shoe. I guess I should go.

Where would you go?

As our world gets smaller, there’s some confusion about what represents a long Journey (9th house) and a short journey (3rd house). Since cars are associated with the 3rd, I think of any trip that can be completed within a day by car a short trip. If you need something faster than a car, or can’t be home to sleep in your own  bed, that’s a long journey.

What do you think?

December 10, 2011 Lunar Eclipse

This Saturday we’ll be treated to a total lunar eclipse. The eclipse is at 18° Gemini, the Libra decan (10-20°) and the Capricorn dwad (17½-20°), so take a look at how the eclipse aspects Venus and Saturn in your chart.

If you have planets or points at 18° Gemini or within a tight orb, you’re more likely to feel some effects from the eclipse than if the eclipse aspects nothing in your chart. Pay close attention to the house issues associated with the Gemini/Sagittarius axis in your chart whether there are aspects or not.

The Gemini/Sagittarius eclipse asks “What do you think you’ve learned and what can you teach others?” Whatever it is, it needs to be done persuasively (Libra decan) and to produce results (Capricorn dwad). To do it authoritatively or in a demanding way is the wrong approach. No I told you so’s with these teachings. We want to be content with the results we achieve because we’ll be living with them for a long time.

Have issues already popped up for you?

If the eclipse is viewable from your area, do try to sneak a peek. It promises to be a red moon. That’s not the same as a Blood Moon which is an alternate name for October’s Hunter Moon. has great tips on watching the eclipse. If you aren’t able to see it from your part of the world, here’s a demonstration of what it will look like to the lucky ones who will get to see it.

Chiron ~ The Wounded Healer

I saw this video on Jana Groscot Matthews’ site, New Moon Manifesting, which I just discovered this past weekend. Jana has some great affirmations for Scorpio, so be sure to check out her lovely site.

There are some wonderful quotes in the video. Two of my favorites are:

In his search for his own cure, he discovered how to heal others.

When I stand before thee at the day’s end, thou shalt see my scars and know that I had my wounds and also my healing. ~ Rabindranath Tagore

I remain rather clueless on how Chiron works in my chart, but expect to know a lot more after transiting Pluto finishes its conjunction to it.

Do you understand how Chiron works in your chart? Have you been healed?

Planting with the Moon for Winter Flowers

Here’s a tip for all you gardeners out there who are anxious to get your containers changed for the autumn and winter season. The best times to get your pansies, violets, mums, snapdragons, ornamental cabbages, and Dianthus transplanted are:

  • Friday, November 4th, after 3:18am and before 2:02pm on Sunday, the 6th, when the Moon is in Pisces, or
  • Tuesday, November 9th after 2:46am (ET) and before the Moon is Full in Taurus on Wednesday, the 10th, at 3:17pm

Times noted are Eastern, so adjust for your time zone. No, I won’t be planting my pansies at 3:18am, but it will be an acceptable time (8:18am) for all my friends across the pond to take trowel in hand.

Both Taurus and Pisces are good for planting, though Taurus is the best. Since these plants are grown for their flowers, the best time for planting is before the Full Moon. If you’re planting bulbs for the Spring, plant them after the Full Moon. A super time is when the Moon is in Cancer, November 14-16. Keep your Moon Garden going by bringing in some solid white pansies. Lettuces will love you if you plant them during Cancer, the sign that rules them.

So which is more important when it comes to planting by the Moon ~ phase or sign? Continue reading

Saturn’s on My Neptune and Boy, Do My Feet Hurt

Wedding Day, from Photobucket

When your feet hurt, you hurt all over and my dogs are barkin!

I wish my feet hurt because I was having the same kind of fun that the bride in the photo was having, but that’s not the case. Tr. Saturn (aching) has been conjunct my Neptune (feet), so my feet have been hurting for a couple of weeks. Honest to goodness, I am giving myself a nice long foot soak and a pedicure this evening just to kick Saturn back. That’ll learn him! (Uh-oh, maybe he’s trying to learn me something. OK, got it, Teach.)

Pisces rules the feet, so Jupiter and Neptune can play a big role in how your feet are faring. When Neptune passed through my first house, I broke three toes on three different occasions. Ouch! Yes, I was careless in that Neptunian way. And I’m the barefoot type, so my toes are frequently compromised since they’re unshod. Saturn/Neptune can show up as corns or callouses on the feet and I’ve been complaining about how dry (and tender) my feet have been. The aching feet are probably just a metaphor for something that hasn’t gotten through my thick skull yet.

Paungger and Poppe, authors of Moon Time, The Art of Harmony with Nature and Lunar Cycles, say that the best time to cut your toenails is on a Friday after sunset. I’m definitely taking their advice tonight.

Here’s the thing. We often look for the BIG MEANING when we get transits to our natal planets or houses. Sometimes, though, it’s things like our feet hurting…or digestion…or how glowy our skin is. The universe definitely keeps up with us even if we’re not paying attention.

Have you ever had anything happen to your feet with a Neptune or Pisces transit?

A Friday Offering to Venus

Today is Friday, the day ruled by Venus, and the Moon is in Taurus. Every goddess deserves an offering on her special day.

When the Moon is in Taurus and reaches my fourth hosue, I turn into a domestic goddess. I simply can’t stop myself from running on instinct. My heart naturally turns to the garden and home. The earth flowers, the sensual world opens up. Here’s a video that beautifully shows what Moon in Taurus feels like to me.

What does Moon in Taurus feel like to you? Where is Taurus in your chart?

Friday is the Day of Sharing and Relationship, of personal Resource and Value. On this day I experience the joy of life and seek to be with those in whose company I feel good. I sing or listen to music, I gratify my senses, I allow my artistic side full expression. Friday is a good day to take an art class, deposit money into the bank, go out on a date.  ~ David Mosley, ZodiacArts

Uranus in Aries ~ A Taste of Armageddon

Armed Predator drone firing Hellfire missile

Image via Wikipedia

Do you remember the Star Trek episode, A Taste of Armageddon (1967), where people fought a computerized war and reported to disintegration booths as casualties?

I don’t write about politics on this blog, but when truth imitates science fiction…well, I need to talk about it. There was a recent New York Times article about drone wars that got me hot on this topic. Drone wars are on the rise. We’re headed to where “no man has gone before” and it just makes me sick.

Is this just one more way Uranus in Aries (detached savagery) and Pluto in Capricorn (big government) will appear in our futures ~ as computerized war mongers with volunteers as casualties? Will we, like our Star Trek volunteers, be lining up one day for the disintegration booth?

No bombs, no blood.

People will just be…gone.

Drones have been around for a while. We’ve been perfecting them in Pluto’s hidden places. They’re quite public now, though. That’s an armed Predator drone firing a Hellfire missile in the photo up there. No windows are necessary because the pilot is not in the drone. Where is the pilot anyway?

Maybe all the war-centered video games marketed to young boys have just been a way to prepare this generation to accept drone wars, a way to encourage them to become involved. Will they volunteer one day?

“The Age of Aquarius.” This is not what we bargained for, is it? It certainly doesn’t seem “humane” to me. Uranus will always surprise us. Pluto will always bring us new ways to destroy.

Maybe the Full Moon in Aries fueled my disgust for this and I just needed to get it out.

What are your views on the drone wars and war-centered video games?____________________________________________

New Moon in Libra ~ An Open Heart

Instead of focusing on the heavy astrology that accompanies this New Moon in Libra, let’s just think about love.

We’ve had some very heavy aspects in the sky for a while and we’re going to have to live with them for a while longer. Yes, the stars have jagged edges these days, but that’s no reason not to embrace the loving ideas that a New Moon in the sign of relationships can bring us ~ rough stars or not. So instead of lamenting all the current rottenness, during this New Moon I encourage you to embrace one of the loveliest partnerships in the zodiac ~ the relationship between Venus and the Moon.

The only two feminine planets we have are joining forces now as the Moon cascades through Venus’ beloved home in Libra. When these two planets combine, we encounter the most beautiful of human characteristics ~ affection, love, and an open heart. Even during times when things are at their worst, we can feel a deep connection to those we love during the time each month when the Moon joins our natal Venus. If you track the Moon, check-in with yourself on these days to see how you respond. You might even be able to know when others are having this transit simply because of the stars in their eyes. A dreamy look on their face lets you know that cupid’s arrow has found its target.

Moon/Venus days are a sweet salve of loving kindness for relationships that need healing. Libra’s emphasis on the partner make these days an especially good time to see through someone else’s eyes. Empathy is there. Walls can weaken. Hearts can mend. Love can bloom.

For happy relationships, these are cupid days when heart-felt emotions can soar. Enjoy them and build on them. It can feel like a honeymoon again.

This New Moon asks us to open our hearts. Venus and the Moon know how sensitive and fragile this terrirtory can be. They ask us to connect, allow some vulnerability, show some affection.

Are you feeling the urge to open your heart to someone?

If you want to write a song about the heart, think about the moon before you start.
~ Paul Simon, Song about the Moon
