Scorpio gets lucky when it comes to ingredients for spell jars because so many herbs and spices fall under the rulership of Mars. Pluto is Scorpio’s modern ruler, but Mars has been with her since the constellations were placed in the sky. Here’s a pic of some of the herbs and spices for Scorpio from my own collection, as well as two recommendations for fantastic books to use when whipping up some sprinkling (or magick) powders and zodiac blends for essential oils.

These are supermarket spices from my own spice rack that can be used for a Scorpio spell jar. They are all associated with the planet Mars.
- Anise seed
- Basil
- Black peppercorns
- Cayenne pepper
- Chili Powder
- Chipotle Chili Pepper
- Clove
- Coffee
- Crushed red pepper
- Cumin
- Five spice blend
- Galangal
- Garam Masala (most blends)
- Ginger
- Mustard seed
The pine cutting in the picture works, too, and represents strength. The cutting even has a tiny baby pine cone representing new life. Dried spices from my own garden that aren’t shown are mugwort and wormwood (Artemisia Absinthium).
Did you notice the labels on many of my spice jars? I created those to make it easier to know just what properties a spice has. No more running to my books! Each label notes the name of the spice, alternate or folk names, properties, the elements and planet associations, the corresponding tarot suit, and has a picture of the plant or processed spice. Here are a few samples:

Recommended Books for Magical Powders and Essential Oil Blends
The Complete Books of Incense, Oils, and Brews by Scott Cunningham is a fabulous selection if you can only choose one.
Astrological Aromatherapy by Patrician Davis really focuses on the astrology of the oils. She does a great job of covering astrology basics, including the houses. One of my favorite parts of her books is the section on bath blends. She has a blend for tonic/stimulant, relaxing, and restorative. I’ve adapted her Scorpio restorative blend to include 3 drops bergamot, 2 drops rose geranium, and 1 drop of patchouli.
Mixing Essential Oils for Magic: Aromatic Alchemy for Personal Blends by Sandra Kynes is a treasure. I love that she chose pomegranate oil as the carrier oil for Scorpio essential oils. Persephone would be quite pleased.
Another of my all-time favorites is The Enchanted Formulary: Blending Magickal Oils for Love, Prosperity, and Healing by Lady Rhea. Check it out. You don’t want to miss this one.
