Formulary is such a magic word. It conjures up images of potions, elixirs, and all kinds of odd aromas drifting through the air. But “odd” can also be “unique,” as in your one of a kind signature scent. It’s so easy to keep a zodiac formulary right near your bath or in your shower with only a few ingredients on hand:
- An unscented liquid pure castile soap.
- A few pure essential oils.
- Some 3 oz. plastic bottles, like the ones made for airline travel.
I highly recommend Dr. Bronner’s liquid castile soap as the base for creating your signature scents. I keep a large bottle of it on hand all the time. It’s nice to have his peppermint, eucalyptus, and lavender on hand for quick blending with essential oils, too.
When blending your own scents, use real essential oils, not the scented oils that are everywhere these days. You may have a few essential oils sitting around that you forget to use. Pull them out and have some fun with them. Some essential oils cause skin sensitivities, so be sure to check them out before lathering up. If you use fragrance oils, make sure you get them from a reliable dealer.
Start by filling a travel bottle almost to the top with the unscented liquid castile soap. Leave a little room at the top to add several drops of your essential oils. Only a few drops are necessary for a 3 oz. bottle. Close the top and shake well. The soap will appear a bit cloudy at first, but that will go away.
Experiment with your Sun, Moon, and Ascendant signs to create your own scent. Get your Mars on for power days or pick an essential oil for the daily Moon sign. Try making a salt or sugar scrub or a scented lotion with your signature scent. Remember to start with pure, unscented soaps and lotions from a trusted source.
Here are suggested scents for each of the zodiac signs I’ve collected from various sources. If there’s a scent you associate with your zodiac sign, please let me know about it in the comments.

I keep a lot of liquid soaps on hand, but it’s impossible to keep a lot of large bottles in the shower at the same time. The travel bottles are perfect for having a nice selection in smaller sizes. Be sure to get the bottles with the flip-up top. You don’t want to have to stop and unscrew the lid. The various colors of the bottles help me remember which is which ~ lavender soap in the purple bottle, chamomile in the blue, lemongrass in the yellow, peppermint in the pink. I’ve even recycled water bottles for this purpose, but I like the travel bottles much better. And, honestly, I just love all those colors.
You can also blend the soaps right onto your shower poof. I like a mixture of lavender and Dr. Teal’s Calming soaps. Add a few drops of each directly onto the poof and lather away all your cares.
If you enjoy making your own blends, you’ll probably enjoy The Enchanted Formulary by Lady Rhea with Eve LeFey. There are more than 200 pages of formulas, with an entire section devoted to mixing blends for each sign of the zodiac and a formula for making a Zodiac Special Attraction oil. The formulas have wonderful names ~ Courting Oil, Dixie Love, Dove’s Heart, Lillith, Easy Life, and Millionaires Dream. Each formula is accompanied by a short essay explaining best use of the blend. The entire book is a true gem.
