New Moon in Sagittarius ~ Ethics or Ego?

Have you ever found yourself in the prickly position of having to make an ethical choice? Maybe you have to choose between sticking to rules and policies because they are, after all, the rules and policies, or taking an alternate path that might lead to major changes in your life. Or someone else’s.

When you’re standing in that
spotlight and called upon to make a difficult ethical choice, you are having a Sagittarian moment. All eyes are on you. You’re defining a personal philosophy that you’ll have to live with.

You may have a ready answer to that question, depending on whether you’re feeling conservative or adventurous. The conservative side of you might be more likely to tend tradition while the adventurous side is open to change. What to do, what to do, what to do?

We can see both conservative and adventurous qualities in Sagittarius’ symbolism. The conservative aspect could be viewed as the horse ~ steady, strong, enduring. The progressive aspect is the arrow ~ directed toward a distant target, fast, piercing. You are the rider in command of both. It is up to you not to shoot your own horse during an almost certainly bumpy ride into your future.

Welcome to the New Moon in Sagittarius!

Are you feeling yourself on the fringes of having to make a decision like that in some area of your life…oh, say, the house of your chart that the coming New Moon in Sag will occupy? If so, you’ve discovered your New Moon project.

The dark days leading up to the New Moon are perfect for spending time defining your philosophy. So before you jump head first into an extemporaneous oratory of your personal philosophy that might bear some heavy weight on your future ~ Whoa, Nellie! Hold your horses, boys! ~ get that ego in check!

It’s good to go ahead and define a personal philosophy for yourself if you don’t have one ~ even if it only relates to the house in your chart where the Sag New Moon will occur.

Here’s what’s hanging over the Sag horizon for me. First a little background. Some of you may remember a post I wrote a few months back where I quoted some advice my Mom gave me:

If you don’t like the way they treat you, honey, get your purse and go home.

Galileo Facing the Inquisition

That’s been on my mind a lot recently. I’m facing an ethical dilemma. It’s personal and involves my job. It’s about respect and appreciation vs. pomposity and control. It will take place in a church, one of Sag’s favorite spots to hang. The Sag New Moon will inconjunct my Sun (ego). That means that both the transiting Sun and Moon will be out of sorts with my natal 6th house (workplace) Sun. (Not looking good? Well, you never know which way that Sag arrow might fly.)

It is important to know when I face my Inquisition whether I am speaking from ethics or ego. Sometimes they’re hard to tell apart. I am also offering a reminder to myself not to lose my sense of humor about this particular issue. Humor counts. It’s really hard to dislike someone you’re smiling at or laughing with.

Ethics are a moral code you would apply for everyone. Ego relates specifically to your opinion of yourself. I’m inclined to believe my situation is a question of ethics…but I could be wrong. I am talking about myself, after all.

Give any decision based on ethics and pride a lot of deep consideration. I’ll be doing my fair share of it this weekend as I prepare for my upcoming meeting.

If you’d like to take a look at some lighter topics to consider for this New Moon, I’ve outlined several in 12 Things to Do When the Sun Transits Sagittarius. I promise there are some that are more fun.

If you’d like to catch up with that post that gave my mom’s good advice, you can find it in New Moon in Cancer ~ The Great Mother.

  1. I am reading this, and thinking about todays headlines in the news about Tiger Woods – stepping back – do the “right thing” to save his marriage and appolgising for all the hurt he has given every one.

    Ethics over ego…

  2. Hi, Carole. I do hope it’s ethics leading Tiger to do this. A fall from grace can certainly knock an ego down a notch or two.

Here’s a curious Sag connection to Tiger’s action. I just read that John Ziegler, the “pastor” of the “First Church of Tiger Woods” has stepped down and will be closing his highly successful fan site. He established the “church” in 1996 and another fan site, http://www.TigerWoodsIsGod.com, in 2000. In an interview, Ziegler says, “He’s no longer the messiah. In fact, I’m not even sure I like him anymore.”

  3. Tiger has the Moon in Sagittarius on the IC…and a 4th house Capricorn Sun…his family is important!!!

I’ve also been wondered…if this didn’t all begin with his father’s death just over 3 years ago…they were exceedingly close and his father had pretty much managed his life…and reported womanizing seems to have begun about that time???

  4. Hmmm, that’s an interesting point. Out from under the parental code and maybe looking for a way to replace the attention Dad paid him? Death of a parent has profound effects, needless to say. Only Tiger knows.

  5. I anticipate this New Moon with great eagerness (I am a Sag).
I have recently gone through big life changes and have spent days in contemplation and doing meditations connecting to the Divine Within/Higher Self. I am desperate for a change within, a New Beginning, a New Divine Connection. A Higher Self awakening will be really good for me now…

    1. Hi, Len.

There have been — and will be — huge changes for so many of us. Reflecting on those changes is always good, and helps us discover what brought us to our crisis points. Then we can start to feel our way in the dark and find a guiding light. I hope the New Moon period brings you wonderful discoveries for your way forward. Getting to know ourselves again is a great gift.
