Your Lunar Return
During every lunar cycle, the transiting moon will return to the same sign and degree as your natal Moon. This is your monthly lunar return, and it’s an especially potent period of each month. It’s essentially your personal New Moon day ~ a time to begin anew for your personal cycle. And nothing gets more personal than your Moon.
These are the days when the transiting Moon is at the exact same degree as your natal Moon. You may find as I do that you are drawn to do the same kinds of things each month when the Moon is in the same sign as your natal Moon. For example, my natal moon is in Taurus in the 4th house. This is a cozy, comfort-seeking, food-oriented sign in the house of home. During Taurus Moon days, I am drawn like clockwork to cooking, cleaning and cozying-up my house, and enjoying the comforts of life. I can always tell when the Moon is moving into Taurus because I am hit with the comfy stick in a way that doesn’t happen at any other time of the month.
Many people cast a chart for their lunar return to learn more about the energies of each lunar cycle. The placement of your natal moon sign is cast with the current position of the transiting planets. The Sun’s sign and house placement, as well as the Ascendant sign, will change from month to month. These two key factors can help you understand your focus and and how you operate in the world for the next four weeks. Most planets will change to a certain degree, the slower moving planets less so. Your Far-Side Moon*
Look across your chart directly opposite your Moon. That point, exactly the same degree as your natal Moon but in the opposite sign, is your Far-Side Moon. If you are really attuned to your natal moon, you may find that this point in your chart signals days that can be stressful, moody, tiresome, or low-energy days. You may be cranky or easily irritated. Plan for that time as you make plans for the month ahead.
*There is no astrological term “Far-Side Moon.” This is the term I use to remind myself where these moon days are located in my own chart.
Your Inner New Moon
These are days when the transiting Moon is at the same degree as your natal Sun. These are prone to being feel-good days when you’re blessed with a cosmic boost. You may feel energized and confident. It’s a day when “the force is with you.”
Your Inner Full Moon
On these days, the transiting Moon is in the opposite sign of your natal Sun. These are often days when physical energy is low or you seem at odds with the world. Take these low energy days into consideration when making plans. For example, my Inner Full Moon is in the 12th house, the house of escape and isolation. I honestly don’t want to do anything on those days. I set them aside as a time of R&R, give myself a break, and cut myself some slack. Everyone needs some down-time.
Track to Get in Tune with your Moon
Track these days during each lunar cycle to see which, if any, of these periods is especially difficult for you. We want to use the Moon cycle to make things easier rather than submit to the stresses that seem all too impossible to manage. They can be managed and you are on the right track to easing them by following the monthly moon cycle.
