I sleep through thunderstorms ~ the louder the storm, the deeper the sleep. If thunder wakes me during the night ~ if it wakes me ~ I am lulled back into sleep by the sound of it. We had a magnificent storm here last night ~ lots of rain, high winds, a yard littered with debris this morning, and glorious thunder through the night.
One of the best night’s sleep I remember getting in years came during a terrible winter storm. The freezing temperatures turned rain to ice, the electricity went off, and winds howled through the trees that crowd my house. The rest of my family sat up till the wee hours, frightened and worried about the damage that might occur with the snapping limbs and falling branches. In the pitch black mayhem ~ submitting my cares to the storm outside ~ I slept like a baby.
Thunder is the voice of the sky gods, with the thunderbolt as their weapon, the destroyer of serpents and spiritual enemies; divine anger; it is also an attribute of monarchs and magicians. ~ J.C. Cooper, An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Traditional Symbols
It is not light that we need, but fire; it is not the gentle shower, but thunder. We need the storm, the whirlwind, and the earthquake. ~ Frederick Douglass
The storm, the earthquake, the whirlwind rouse us out of passivity. Mars’ mission is to rouse us to action for a specific cause, but it’s not always a war. Sometimes it’s just a whirlwind of activity for a while.
Mars passes through Aries every two years, spending a couple of months in a natal house. Because Mars moves quickly, a transit to a planet will only last a few days. This time around, Mars will travel through Aries until May 12th when he slows down in Taurus. Depending on your chart and your natural inclinations and life circumstances, this may or may not be an important passage for you. (Bob Marks has succinct descriptions of Mars transits here.)
Until April 16th, Mars will be conjunct transiting Uranus. The warrior is travelling with the sky god. Does this mean that there will be heightened activity in your chart? If you have planets at 0-10 degrees of the signs, you might feel the effects for a few days or at least hear the boom of the sky god’s voice.
How do you respond to storms of activity?
- Do you go unconscious like I do during a real storm?
- Do you prepare to meet the storm by laying in provisions?
- Are you the sky god, the creator of the storm?
What whirlwinds (if any) are headed your way with this Mars transit, and how are you preparing for the storm of activity that Mars has in store for you?
I want to share this video with you. It’s a choir recreating a thunderstorm. It makes me think how sometimes we create ~ and can control ~ the storms in our lives.
